What?
The Polish School of Posters is an internationally important phenomenon in Polish visual culture and graphic design. It is a legend worth discovering, but also a myth that should be questioned and tested.
The Polish School of Posters could just as well be called the “Polish School of Male Poster Designers”. The presence of women in this history was limited, often symbolic, and pushed to the margins. The patriarchal system and social conditions directed women graphic designers towards other types of commissions — less prestigious and less visible than posters.
The exhibition is an attempt to bring into the gallery space the book “Graficzki. Nieopowiedziane historie polskich projektantek grafiki użytkowej 1945–1989” by Alicja Kobza. The exhibition is part of a wider process of restoring the visibility and presence of Polish women designers in the history of Polish graphic design.
